Foodie Friday On A Saturday - My Mam's Leek And Potato Soup

I think I've mentioned this before but food has always been very important to me and my family, and as a result so many of my childhood memories concern food. From my grandma's amazing, homemade fresh cream cake, and welsh cakes, to eating my other grans meals on wheels sponge puddings and custard and Cheshire cheese food was an important part of my childhood.

My mam and dad also made so many things over the year that have ended up as real family favourites. Delights include flapjack (see my recipe here),  melting moment cookies, sponge puddings, chocolate ladybird cake and homemade leek and potato soup.

Just thinking about this soup makes my mouth water, it's warming, creamy and absolutely delicious, this is my mam's tried and tested over many years recipe. Apologies for the lack of pictures compared to my usual recipes, my lovely mummy kept forgetting to tell me before she moved onto the next stage lol

My Mam's Leek And Potato Soup

2 Medium Leeks (About 300g)
350g Potato
50g Butter Or Margarine
1/2 Pint Vegetable Stock
1 Pint Milk
Salt And Pepper To Taste

1. Finely chop your leeks, and rinse well. Leeks can contain a bit of grit so make sure you give them a good wash, and then drain well.

Chop your potatoes into a small dice. These were nice, clean baby potatoes, so we just washed them and  left the skin on, but you can peel them if you prefer.

2. Put you butter into a large pan (we use the base of the pressure cooker as per usual in soup making) and melt slowly over a low heat.

Then add your leeks and potatoes to the pan, them give them a stir till there all coated in the butter. Then cut a circle of greaseproof paper to the size of the fan, and lightly butter it. Then put the paper directly on top the leeks and potato, to keep the steam and the moisture in and leave on a low heat for about 15 minutes until the vegetables have softened. Keep having a little peek and a stir, if it looks as though they sticking or burning turn the ring down.

3. When the vegetables have sweated down, add your vegetable stock, and then add the milk, then turn the ring up to a simmer, don't boil it as it will cause the milk to split / curdle.

It happened a bit here but if it does don't worry about it, it will still taste great, and the blending should even out. Simmer for about about 15 minutes till all the vegetables have softened.

4. Then it's time to blend, you don't have to but for me it's an essential. I did it in a few batches in my blender, take care if you do it this way though because it will be hot you might want to leave it to cool for a while before hand.

5. After you've blended it return it the pan and reheat. Check the seasoning and add salt and pepper to taste, this soup benefits from pepper in my opinion.

6. Voila pop into bowls and serve x This recipe made 4 large bowls x It keeps for a day or so in the fridge but because of the potato I would be a little wary about freezing it.

This recipe is amazing it taste soooo creamy and indulgent, but it only comes in at around 240 calories for a large bowlful. Personally I think this recipe is amazing as it is but you could pimp it up even more by adding cream, using chicken stock, or even adding cheese or chicken or bacon. As with all soups though you can alter the recipe pretty easily, adding what you have, and varying the amounts and flavourings. This is a real family favourite in LouLouLand, and we usually have frozen blanched leeks in the freezer all year round so we can make it even when leeks are out of season. Are you a fan of leek and potato soup leave me a comment and let me know x

Fresh Breath Courtesy Of Dentyl Active Plaque Fighter Mouthwash in Fresh Clove*

I've said it before and I'll say it again there is more to beauty than skincare and make up. There's no point wearing a knockout bright lipstick if your teeth are in bad condition. Having a good oral hygiene regime isn't just important for the look and beauty of our mouths, it's also important for general health.

I've never been scared of the dentists and I've always been made aware of how important it is to look after my teeth. I brush twice a day, I try to floss regularly, and I always use mouthwash, to freshen my breath and to leave my mouth feeling squeaky clean. I used to think that all mouthwashes were made equal but way back in 2012 I was introduced to several mouthwashes from Dentyl Active and since then I've used nothing else.

The two products that I tried were Dentyl Active Complete Care in Icy Fresh Mint and Dentyl Active Enamel Restore also in Icy Fresh Mint (you can read my reviews here and here x) They did everything that you would expect a mouthwash to do and a bit more besides. Yes, they left my breath fresh, and my mouth feeling clean, but I loved the fact that they seemed to remove even the tiniest piece of food debris from my mouth and even things that normal brushing doesn't remove and sorry to be ever so slightly gross but to physically see evidence of how well it performed in your bathroom sink really was the selling point for me.

Every mouthwash I've ever used has been flavoured with some sort of mint. Think of mint and you automatically think something dentist related or chewing gum! but some manufacturer have bucked the trend and are now producing mouthwashes and toothpastes that taste of something.

Dentyl Active feature two none minty mouthwashes in there range Icy Fresh Cherry and Fresh Clove. As you probably know I'm not a cherry fan so I was pleased to be sent a bottle of the Dentyl Active Plaque Fighter Mouthwash in Fresh Clove to try out.

Like the rest of the mouthwashes in the Dentyl Active range this is a dual phase product. In the bottle you get a layer of turquoise / blue liquid and a layer of vibrant pink liquid, which you shake together to get a purple coloured liquid which appears to have tiny little sparkles in it - very pretty :)

The mouthwash itself is designed to kill 99.9% of oral bacteria, to lift plaque from the teeth and gums, and to provide long lasting breath freshness. It's also alcohol free so you shouldn't get the stinging and burning sensation that you can often get with some dental products.

What about the taste? well if I'm being honest it doesn't scream clove to me. There is definitely a bit of fresh mint there, but you don't actually get the spicy clove kick till afterwards, and whilst it leaves your mouth feeling fresh and tingly it definitely doesn't sting or burn. Performance wise it does everything that the previous variants do, and that it claims too,

This product is another winner for me and something that I will definitely consider repurchasing. My mind has been changed for good now and I really do think it's worth spending just a little bit more on your mouthwash. Dentyl Active Plaque Fighter Mouthwash in Fresh Clove retails at around £3.15 for 500ml.x Any questions please leave me a comment x

Spring Time Nails Courtesy Of OPI - Planks A Lot

I don't know about where you are but here in my little part of Co Durham something very strange has happened over the last few days - the sun is shining! It's been so long since we've had any sort of light that I've been taking advantage and getting a few blog pictures done. I fancied doing a nails of the day post so I had a little look in my vast nail polish collection to look for spring like colours to match the sunny weather.

Although I received this polish, for Christmas I think it's the perfect colour for this time of year. OPI - Planks A Lot from the Pirates Of The Caribbean collection isn't a pale sugary lilac, it's more of a dirty lilac, perfect for when the weather doesn't seem to know what it's doing :)

It applies like a dream, the pro wide bush covered every nail in 1 stripe or less. It's pretty full coverage but I still used two coats for a perfect finish.

I have a real obsession with lilacs and purples and this colour is one of the nicest in my collection. Are you a lilac nail polish fan ? leave me a comment and let me know.

Trimming My Stash - February 2014 Edition - Empties, Mini Reviews And A Sort Of Giveaway - Closed

Another overdue post for you, this time it's all about about empties. February's total was a little bit disappointing if I'm honest, I only managed to finish 6 items :(

Soap & Glory Flake Away - 50ml
Yonka Pamplemousse Normal To Oily Skin Protective And Vitalizing Cream With Botanical Essential Oils - 50ml
Avon Solutions Body Cellu-Sculpt Massaging Anti Cellulite Treatment - 200ml
Baylis & Harding Sweet Mandarin And Grapefruit Balancing Body Wash - 750ml
FCUK Signature Bodywash - 300ml
Primark Beauty Oil Balancing Cleansing Wipes With Tea Tree x 25 Wipes
Total - 6 Items

Okay there were a few bits that I've been using forever and I thought would never end but I'm still a little bit mehhh that I couldn't manage to finish at least a couple of more products. Never mind some of the things that I thought I would finish in February are very nearly done so March should be a better month.

1. Soap & Glory Flake Away - 50ml

A mini to start off with -This scrub came in my Boots Beauty Advent Calendar. I love all of the Soap & Glory body scrubs and this one was no exception. This is the original, with the famous Soap & Glory fragrance. It's nice and scrubby but it feels moisturising at the same time. I will definitely consider repurchasing all the scrubs I've tried from this range.

2. Yonka Pamplemousse Normal To Oily Skin Protective And Vitalizing Cream With Botanical Essential Oils - 50ml

This was an item that came in a beauty box, and at first I loved it, I must have done I bought another one!, but whether it's down to a change in my skin (ageing!) or the change in the weather but by the end of the tube I hated it. This facial moisturiser from Yonka Paris is for normal to oily skin and contains essential oils such as Grapefruit, Lime, and Lemon. It's designed to revitalise and brighten the skin and tighten the pores. It's not a bad moisturiser by any means but I think my skin at the moment just isn't oily enough for it and is just a tad too sensitive.

The sad thing is I actually have a new and sealed tube of this moisturiser in my skincare drawer, it's unboxed and in the old style packaging (same as my empty) but the foil seal is still intact. A new tube would retail at a scary £36 but one of you can have this one for free.

If you have oily skin and want to try this out and your in the UK leave a comment on this post telling me that you want to try it and leave a contact email and I'll pick a name out at random next Sunday. It seems a shame to waste it when somebody else might see more benefit from it than I would. You can find out more about it here x

3. Avon Solutions Body Cellu-Sculpt Massaging Anti Cellulite Treatment - 200ml

Anti-cellulite products - I've used lots of them over the years and to be honest 90% of them have done naff all and this was another one. This was just a basic firming cream which came in a tube with a dimpled massaging head on the end. It left the skin feeling a bit softer but it didn't really do much with regards to the dimply bits. It's no longer in the Avon catalogue which I guess tell you everything you need to know.

4. Baylis & Harding Sweet Mandarin And Grapefruit Balancing Body Wash - 750ml

This is another one of those products that seemed to go on for ever - no matter how much I used the bottle never seemed to go down. You can get Baylis & Harding everywhere especially at this time of year (Mothers Day) and for the price I really like the range and their products make great gifts. I thought that this would smell like the handwash that I reviewed here but the smell wasn't quite as strong. It was nice but it just wasn't quite as zesty as I'd hoped.

5. FCUK Signature Bodywash - 300ml

One of my biggest beauty disappointments of 2013 came in the Boots Christmas Gift Guide when to my horror I couldn't find the usual FCUK French Connection Signature gift set - they'd changed the fragrance :( I first got a gift set several Christmas' ago in a gorgeous patent weekend bag and I fell in love with the smell. It's hard to describe but I think it's classed as an oriental floral. I stocked up in the 2012 / 2013 sales so I still have quite a few bits to use up but every time I use up something from the range now I'm going to be disappointed that I can't get any more :(

6. Primark Beauty Oil Balancing Cleansing Wipes With Tea Tree x 25 Wipes

I've just had a look through my blog because I thought I'd done a full review of these but it doesn't look like I have. The probably isn't a need to do one now though because I've talked about these that often both on here and on my You Tube channel. Basically you get two packs of 25 wipes for just £1. Designed for normal to oily skin then contain the real I am when it comes to Tea Tree, Melaleuca Alternifolia, as well as Witch Hazel, and Aloe Vera. I'm not huge on using wipes on my face but these babies do the job and remove make up without any problem, when I'm having an sick or a lazy day. I predominantly use them for freshening up, and for clearing up swatches but they are a really good bargain basement buy. They probably are the biggest or thickest wipes but for the price I'm not going to argue.

So they were my February empties, as I say not the most impressive tally of empties I've ever achieved but it was better than nothing and hopefully March will be better x Don't forget to comment if you'd like my unopened Yonka moisturiser and I'll let you know who gets it next Sunday xx Thanks for reading xx

Foodie Friday On A Saturday - What I Ate In February And A Quick Update

Hey lovely people x I hope your all well x I haven't been hence the numerous disappearing acts. Hormones CFS / Fibro Stuff and a horrid gastric flu bug given to me by my lovely mummy have all meant that blogging and in fact life has taken a back seat. I'm still not feeling amazing but I'm going to try and regain some of my blogging mojo and get some long overdue posts up.

My end of the month posts bar my weight loss one, fell by wayside in February so that's where I'm going to start. There won't be a haul post till the end of March though, I haven't felt well enough to do the accompanying video so I'll save my goodies till I do x In the meantime I'm going to start with something that hasn't been at the top of my agenda over the last week - food x

If you saw my most recent post (it's here if you didn't) you'll know that in February I managed to lose another 6lbs :). I haven't starved myself by any means and if I've wanted treats I've had them - Malteaster Bunnies, and Kinder Mini Eggs yum, yum bring it on! That said I've still been good if I've ate too much one day I've made up for it the next. Most of us have a misconception that diet food and healthier food is boring well not for me it's not. Trying to eat better has given me the perfect opportunity to experiment with food and whilst I've eaten a lot of old favourites in February I've also tried quite a few new recipes.

First up a couple of things that I've made before on numerous occasions - my veggie chilli served with a Mexican style rice (this rice was bought but I definitely think I can replicate the style and flavourings myself ), and a veggie cottage pie topped with just a tiny bit of grated cheese - guess which is mine based on the amount of grated cheese lol

Yup mine is the one with the least cheese - hard for a cheese fiend but sacrifices need to be made in the name of weight loss lol. This recipe always ends up being made with leftovers really. My mum is a big stew / casserole maker - she makes some for her with either chunks of beef or mince, and she makes mine with either soya chunks or soya mince. Never knowingly under catered we always have left overs and we usually have left over mash, so I make ickle cottage pies in individual dishes which I then cook in the oven  - yummy and super filling! I also sometimes do this with leftover chilli and sweet potato mash - mmmm

Something else which I make a lot now and I've become quite fond of overnight oats -basically porridge oats layered with yogurt, and fruit, and left overnight in the fridge. I've had a few early starts lately and I find this really filling and great for setting you up for the rest of the day. I also like the fact that it isn't a boring breakfast, you can very the yogurt flavourings, and the fruits to suit. I've used everything from from frozen berries and bananas with a Easi Yo boysenberry yogurt, to peaches, and bananas, with apricot yogurt. You can also add a bit of milk for extra liquid, or nuts and seeds for extra nourishment.

During February I also ate a couple of things that I'd been experimenting with for some time. I'm still not 100% happy with my Vegetarian French Onion Soup recipe but it was filling and warming and it's definitely worth making x I still need to savoury it up a bit more to suit my tastes though.

Something I was happier with though was my Veggie Bean And Nut Burgers (see the recipe here x). Although again the recipe can be played with a bit I think that this recipe is really good as it is. The first lot I had with salad

and the second lot I had with Slimming World salad, low fat coleslaw and Slimming World Chips

Slimming World Chips have been one of three fabulous discoveries that I made in February. I remember my mum making something similar when I was younger but basically what they are potatoes cut into chip shapes, parboiled for about 5 minutes then drained and towel dried before being sprayed with low fat cooking spray and then popped into a hot oven for 20-35 minutes till they crisp up. You can also sprinkle them with spices, herbs and salt for more flavour.

Okay they aren't exactly like proper fried chips but there really tasty and much lower in fat. Obviously they aren't as crispy but there fluffy inside and have an almost roast / baked potato taste. My mum recently picked me up a chip mesh so I'm hoping that that will make them even crispier - I'll keep you posted x

Yes you could make them with a sprinkling of oil but using a cooking spray saves so many calories as well as a non stick pan they are invaluable if your trying to lose weight I love Fry Light all you need is a few sprays into a pan or onto a baking sheet and most varieties are only around 1 calorie per spray. I love the butter one for pasta, sweet things, and as an air popper popcorn flavouring but the garlic one is my true love. It smells ridiculously garlicky but unlike me if your not a huge garlic lover the taste and smell does wear off slightly. I love the garlic one for chillis, frying mushrooms and for flavouring my chips - yum!

Although I'm not following Slimming World I know people who have and I've been stalking the Slimming World Instagram feed looking for recipe inspiration. In February I made two recipes that have are popular with people on the Slimming World plan. The first one was Curry Loaf or Chickpea Dahl Loaf.

This rather weird sounding recipe is basically a cooked sachet of curry flavoured rice mixed with eggs, and a can of lentil or chick pea curry dahl and baked in the oven. Weird sounding but ohhhh so good - a weird combo of curry, quiche and rice that just works. The dahl is quite hard to find and the one I got in Morrisons was a little bit salty so next time I think I'll have a go at making my own but I will definitely make this recipe again - in fact I've craved it ever since lol The thing I like about this recipe is that it can be served both hot or cold. It made four servings so me and Mummy Lou had one hot and one cold. First of all we had it hot with Slimming World Chips and vegetables

and then we had it cold with salad.

Another weird sounding Slimming World recipe is Diet Coke Chicken. My first thought when I heard about this recipe was yuck but think about it. All barbecue and a lot of oriental recipes are famous for that sweet savoury flavour so why shouldn't it work?

Well I thought I'd try it - obviously I replaced the chicken with Quorn pieces, I fried them off in Fry Light with onion, garlic, peppers, mushroom, finely chopped carrots and celery, then I added a carton of tomato passata, some soy sauce and some Chinese five spice powder and then a can of Diet Coke (well Pepsi Max - same difference ;). Then I cooked it down until the sauce had thickened. I was cynical, Mummy Lou was even more cynical but in fact it was amazing - it doesn't taste of coke, it has that sort of sweet, spicy flavour with an Asian twist from the anise flavour of the five spice. It made four servings the first two we had with boiled rice

and the second we had with homemade egg fried rice. Although I make my Indonesian Rice With Tofu on a regular basis which is basically a version of egg fried rice I'd never made it as a standalone before, so I gave that a go too. All I did was fry off some peppers, peas, spring onion and garlic in Fry Light, before adding some boiled rice, then adding an egg and some soy sauce. Amazing and I'll definitely be making that again too. Both of these Slimming World recipes sound a little bit weird but they are definitely worth trying. I'll post some more detailed recipes if you'd like but just do an online search for either Slimming World Diet Coke Chicken or Curry Loaf and you'll find lots of recipes and reviews.

Main meals are fine but where I'd normally fall down is snacking. I'm a comfort eater, fridge grazer personified but now I'm trying to make better choices (well most of the time) when it comes to snacking. As well as drinking much more water to try and curb my appetite I'm trying to eat more fruit. My mum has always been a big fruit fan, me not so much. I really am trying though I've had 4 lots today alone, raspberries, a kiwi, a clementine and a pear. A sweet hit without the fat or the calories :)

I've also being relying a lot on treats from Metcalfe's. Alas I wasn't one of the lucky bloggers to be sent boxes of yummy popcorn based treats but I having been stocking up in my local Poundland. There snack sized packets all come in at less than a hundred calories each, and their chocolate and yogurt rice cakes taste much more indulgent than they actually are and also come in at less than 100 calories each.

My final diet saviours and foodie favourites from February are Pom Bear snacks - I love Pom Bears, okay they probably are geared towards children but there gluten free and again less than 100 calories a bag.

So they were my February foodie favourites. I think February was very much about thinking about what I was eating and subsequently experimenting with food and new recipes, and that something that I want to keep doing throughout March. I already have a few recipes that I want to try so I'll keep you posted. Next weeks Foodie Friday post which will hopefully be on a Friday for a change ;) will be a recipe but rather than an experiment it's a Mummy Lou classic x Thanks for reading and I'll see you tomorrow with my February empties post and a chance to get your hands on a free skincare product xx

Weight Loss Update - 2 Months In - 22lbs Down

February has been a tough month for me in a lot of ways but thankfully as the pictures show it hasn't affected my weight loss - Over the last month I've managed to lose 6lbs, taking me to 22lbs altogether which is a massive 1st 8lbs.

Normally when I'm stressed or sad I turn to food, and whilst I've had more than a few treats over the last four weeks - I've tried to find other outlets for my feelings including reading a good book, painting my nails and having a nice bath.

I'm not going to beat myself up for the odd bad day though, I've only had one day though where I went over my calorie and fat goal but I built a bridge and got over it and just tried extra hard for the rest of that week and in the end it didn't really make a difference and I still lost. As something I found on Instagram says - "one bad meal won't make you fat just like one good meal won't make you skinny". I think this is so important I've seen so many people bad mouth themselves and beat themselves up for eating something naughty don't do it - it's isn't worth it - you've done it you can't change it so accept it and start afresh.

Go me I've changed! lol ! Seriously though I really don't know where all of this willpower and positivity is coming from - this is one of the few things that I feel positive about at the minute and I think my Thinking Slimmer Slim Pods are at least partially responsible. I'm really starting to change the way I think and as a result I'm seeing changes in the numbers on the scales and I'm I'm starting to see some non scale victories too with some visible physical changes.

One of the things that's helped keep me motivated this month strangely enough has been food and experimenting with new snacks and new recipes. I'm going to do a What I Ate In February post on Friday where you can see some of the things that I've been eating and some of the things that I consider diet saviours.

So another month down and another 8lbs closer to my goal - I'm feeling happy and positive for the month ahead despite a couple of challenges coming my way namely Shrove Tuesday and Mothers Day - but I'm confident enough now to know that two days off won't halt my progress and that I have a bad day I can pull it back round and get back on track x

I'd like to thank all of you for your support it really does make a difference x I'll do another update in a months time but in the meantime you can follow my weekly updates on both twitter, my weight loss page and on instagram

Nails Of The Day - Essie - Butler Please

After wearing mannequin hands last week, this week I've returned to a colour that's a lot more me - bright blue!

I love blue nail polish and this recent addition from Essie fits the bill perfectly

I picked up the rather oddly named Butler Please just before Christmas from the discount make up stall near House Of Fraser in the Metro Centre near where I live for a few pounds. It's still part of the regular line so you should still be able to get your hands on it, but I would definitely check out some of the discount make up sites before you consider paying full price for it x

It's a gorgeous bright almost French blue. It's not quite as bright as Nails Inc Baker Street (post coming soon) but it's still pretty vibrant. This is two coats but with careful application you could possible get away with one. The brush was quite thick on this one which made application super quick and easy. I love colours like this - are you a fan too? leave me a comment and let me know x
